Former Citizen TV journalist Chemutai Goin was among the passengers onboard a Kenya Airways plane that suffered a bird strike while landing at Kisumu International Airport on Thursday, May 30, 2024.

Narrating the ordeal, Chemutai revealed that the plane took off at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport at 5:25 p.m. and was scheduled to land in Kisumu at 6:15 p.m.

She added that they encountered the bird strike in their third attempt to land after a disruption due to inclement weather.

“On the third landing attempt, we struck a bird. We finally landed, but the aircraft was inoperable, so we waited to be towed from the runway, but the bird was lodged in the steering system, so it could not turn, ” said Chemutai.

Confirming the incident, the Kenya Airways Authority (KAA) said that all passengers aboard flight KQ 670 are safe.

“The aircraft landed safely in Kisumu, however, it was not able to exit the runway fully as the bird strike affected the aircraft steering components. All passengers and crew onboard since disembarked the aircraft and are safe,’’ KAA stated.

The airline said they are working with relevant authorities to have the aircraft removed and resume normal operations.

It further said that passengers on affected flights will be provided with updated travel information and assistance as needed.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused and assure our passengers of their safety and comfort as our highest priority,” it added.
