Puzzle of county cleaner worth Sh615 million, owns private school

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested Kakamega county head of cleaning services for suspected corruption.

The individual is suspected to have amassed wealth valued at Sh615 million through corrupt dealings including public theft and benefitting at the expense of the taxpayer.

According to EACC, the employee in question owns multiple high-end properties, including a private school worth Sh220 million that is reportedly managed by his wife.

He also owns prime parcels of land across the country, six luxury vehicles, multiple restaurants, and residential buildings in Kakamega County.

EACC’s investigations indicate that the official’s wealth is vastly disproportionate to his earnings as a county employee, adding that there were numerous complaints about the official’s source of wealth which prompted the investigation.

“The Commission took up the matter upon receipt of complaints that the official had accumulated unexplained wealth worth millions of shillings through kickbacks that the Commission reasonably believes he received from suppliers and contractors when he served in the Procurement Department before he was moved to his current Department,” read part of the EACC statement.

As part of the probe, EACC raided the homes and offices of the suspect and other county officials where key documents and cash were seized.

Speaking during the probe, EACC spokesperson Eric Ngumbi noted that the arrest and search operation of the head of the Kakamega County cleaning services was part of an ongoing investigation into suspected proceeds of corruption.
