Tier-one lender Co-operative Bank has reinforced its leadership in sustainable financial practices by being named the Overall Winner at the 2024 Sustainable Financial Initiative (SFI) Awards. The awards are organized by the Kenya Bankers Association (KBA).
This marks the fifth time in seven years that Co-operative Bank has won the sustainability title, having previously clinched it in 2017, 2019, 2022 and 2023.
The achievement asserts the bank’s dedication to creating a positive impact not only on the financial sector and the economy but also on the environment and society as a whole.
The awards challenge Kenyan financial institutions to balance their pursuit of financial returns with the country’s future economic priorities and socio-environmental responsibilities.
“Sustainability is fully integrated into our business model that stands on three pillars of Economic Stewardship, Social Sustainability and Environmental Stewardship,” said Co-op Bank Group Managing Director Gideon Muriuki.
Co-op Bank supports its customers’ growth in a way that ensures long-term sustainability, by ensuring a commitment to integrating sustainable practices. This approach has made the lender highly appealing in the Kenyan market.
“As a bank that is predominantly owned by the 15 million-member Co-operative Movement that is represented in all regions of the country, we are inclusive by design, which has enabled us to not only deliver shared prosperity today, but also helped us build an awareness and prudence to avoid participation in commercial activities that risk putting future generations in jeopardy,” Muriuki further noted.
Co-op Bank was recently honored with the prestigious Best Financier of SMEs in Africa Gold Award at the Global SME Finance Awards. The bank received this recognition in the SME Financier of the Year in Africa category.
