How sickness pushed Dorcas Kagendo from a millionaire to a beggar

Co-Op post

It feels so embarrassing to go back to the drawing board after years of eating life with a big spoon. But for Dorcas Kagendo, it was something that was out of her capacity.

Born in Nkubu in Meru county, Kagendo was a very successful businesswoman with multiple investments in the lucrative real estate sector.

She also took home a fat salary from the NGO she worked for, which enabled her to acquire two cars and take care of her one daughter after a divorce from her husband.

She quit her role as an office administrator in 2018, but things did not favor her after the exit. In a past interview with Tuko,  Kagendo revealed that immediately after quitting her job, her two cars got involved in accidents.

This forced her to sell her land to cover the loss. She later left the country for Saudi Arabia in search of greener pastures. Tragedy hit while in Saudi Arabia when her body started to turn yellow in color.

She was later diagnosed with Pancreatic cancer, which she said her doctors did their best to save her. According to her, the doctors went the extra mile by donating blood among themselves to treat her.

‘’They said is kidney failure and also said my liver was not functioning. I also got infected with Coronavirus and diabetes at the same time, and my temperature was ever high,’’ she said.

‘’They donated blood seven times because I was dying. They said because I was a Kenyan, they would ensure I returned home alive,’’ added Kagendo.

After regaining strength, the doctors advised her to return to Kenya for Chemotherapy. After returning to Kenya last year, she said her family ran away from her, and she had no one to take care of her.

She sold all her property to pay for her medical and settle other basic needs. Having been left with zero financial cushion, she was adopted by a woman who later released her to Nkubu hospital after discovering that the cancer was at the fourth stage.

Kagendo received treatment at the Nkubu before being transferred to Chogoria hospital and the Kenyatta National Hospital.

Having no one to sit by the bedside and give her a token, she would sleep hungry, and at some point, her daughter would feed her with warm water.

She has since survived in the hands of well-wishers who helped her pay all her bills and complete the chemotherapy. She currently lives in a modern house that she also acquired through a well-wisher.

Having regained strength and living happily again, Kagendo compares her story to that of the Biblical job in the Old Testament, having been a prosperous woman with millions of money but lost all.

Her gratitude and belief in God were evident in all her sentiments, noting that her health and wealth are being restored again. She said she is now a millionaire again.

‘’Today I’m like Job. I can do all my things again, and I’m not as weak as I was some months ago,’’ she said in a recent interview with Afrimax English.
