The Co-operative University of Kenya (CUK) has nominated Co-operative Bank chief executive officer Dr Gideon Muriuki for the conferment of the Doctor of Humane Letters.
Dr Muriuki will be honoured for his distinguished career in the banking industry, and especially his immense contribution to the co-operative sector.
“We shall be honouring Dr Gideon Muriuki for his exemplary service to the nation, successful turnaround and great expansion of the Co-operative Bank of Kenya, great leadership during pandemic by offering critical relief and support to over 15 million members of the co-operative movement in Kenya, and outstanding contribution to the development of rural finance in Africa,” the Co-operative University of Kenya said in a statement.

The conferment of the Doctor of Humane Letters to Dr Muriuki will take place during the 6 Graduation Ceremony of The Co-operative University of Kenya. The graduation ceremony is set to be held on Friday, 25th February 2022 at the Main Campus, Karen.
This is the latest honour Dr Muriuki is receiving over the last few months for his contribution to the banking sector, his stewardship of the Co-operative bank, and his relationship with customers struggling to get a footing in the wake of the economic hardships that have been occasioned by the pandemic.
In October 2021, Muriuki was named the best bank CEO in Africa. Dr. Muriuki who is the the Group Managing Director & CEO at Co-op Bank scooped the best bank CEO award during the 2021 edition of the African Banking Awards that were organised by EMEA Finance. The EMEA Finance Awards recognizes corporate leaders and financial institutions which, through their client focus and sound leadership, continue to increase profitability, deliver affordable credit to the retail and wholesale markets, and support local and transnational corporations do business.
The EMEA Finance Awards recognized the decision by Dr. Muriuki not to push for staff retrenchment and opting to retain full staff complement during the pandemic.
