Career profile of Gachagua’s Israeli-schooled lawyer Elisha Ongoya

Career profile of Gachagua's Israeli-schooled lawyer Elisha Ongoya

Backed with a fierce-looking demeanour to show that he is all about business, Advocate Elisha Ongoya Zebedee has been making waves on social media for his incisive questioning of Gachagua’s impeachment motion mover, Mwengi Mutuse during a Senate trial hearing.

Unknown to many, Elisha Ongoya is one of the leading legal minds in the country’s judicial courtrooms and has represented many senior people in his career, including top politicians.

His recent ascent into the national spotlight was courtesy of his witty acumen in cross-examining Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse. He challenged the motion mover, who is also a lawyer, to substantiate claims that the DP amassed a wealth of Sh. 5.2 billion since taking office as the country’s second in command.

Mutuse fumbled the question after failing to give a convincing answer as to how he and his team arrived at the Sh. 5.2 billion valuation, admitting that it was an estimate of Gachagua’s current land values and properties.

Elisha Ongoya is an alumna of St. Paul’s Ikahlika Primary School and the Musingu High School where he laid the foundation for a thrilling career in law and academia.

His professional journey into law started at the University of Nairobi’s Parklands Campus where he attained his law degree. Ongoya proceeded to the Galilee International Management Institute (GIMI) in Nahalal, Israel where he studied Management of Higher Learning and graduated in 2017.

He holds a Master of Law (LLM) from the University of Nairobi and is also an advocate of the High Court of Kenya. In the courtroom, Ongoya has been described as having a meticulous and commanding presence which has ensured he remains a highly sought-after legal counsel.

Before DP Gachagua’s impeachment hearing, Ongoya played a big role in ensuring Governor Kawira Mwangaza’s political career survived the orchestrated impeachment.

His other most notable achievement was stopping the controversial Building Bridges Initiative (BBI), where he successfully argued in both the High Court and Court of Appeal that it was unconstitutional.

Furthermore, his career is not only marked by ribbons of fiercely talented legal advocacy but also his commitment to nurturing the legal profession in Kenya. Elisha Ongoya is a senior lecturer at Kabarak University.

Elisha Ongoya continues to defend his clients through his Nairobi-based law firm, Ongoya & Wambola Advocates where he is the partner assigned to handle high-profile cases. He is also highly regarded for his scholarly contributions such as the publication of several legal papers and articles.
