Equity Bank’s Head of Derivatives, Sales & Structuring, Brian Onyino emerged the winner of the 2018 Refinitiv Awards, formerly known as the Thomas Reuters Africa Awards, under the category of Innovation and Technology.

The awards organized by Thomson Reuters Africa seeks to recognize and celebrate world’s top most organisation’s customer excellence, excellence in business practice, partnerships, embracing technology and innovation companies for their role in providing the most innovative solutions to commodities and highlighting the great work being done by financial markets participants.

Mr. Onyino received the accolade after outperforming his peers by a significant margin and being recognized for his efforts in growing the Equity Bank derivative desk.

Speaking during the awards dinner, Reuters Africa Managing Director Sneha Shah emphasized the importance of innovation and using technology as a way of staying competitive in an ever changing market.

“To help navigate the future, we need to change. Financial markets players need to continue empowering Africans to build financial markets and tools that increase financial inclusion,” she said.

Additionally, Equity Bank General Manager for Treasury, Daniel Gachau emerged as the Runners-Up in the Innovation Award category clinching his second award for the night. Gachau had earlier been awarded 1st finalist in the Embracing Technology category bringing the Bank’s total awards tally to three.

The three awards affirm Equity Bank’s efforts in being the champion of the socio-economic prosperity of the people of Africa through its ever evolving products, customer understanding and innovation.
