Father’s Day: Man giving identity to homeless, fatherless kids

What makes up a great father? This is one of the hardest questions to answer. However, one feature that is characteristic among all great men who are fathers is the incredible sacrifice and love it takes to raise a child or children, especially when those children aren’t biologically theirs.

Take Bishop David Munyiri Thagana of Glory Outreach Assembly. Born in Karatina, Nyeri County, Bishop Munyiri has many men and women who call him father.

He has 3 biological children and hundreds of other adopted children in 7 children’s homes, spiritual children, mentees and trainees.

Over a thousand of these children call him dad. Some who couldn’t find a father figure to identify with have ended up taking his surname in their national identity cards.

“I feel honoured to be nurturing a generation that would otherwise be lost and without an identity,” he said on June 19th, 2022 during a Father’s Day event at the Glory Outreach Assembly.

Apart from the children’s homes,  Munyiri also has a foster care program where some of the children he’s unable to accommodate are taken in by foster parents.

“Out of the seven children’s homes, we have those that cater exclusively for HIV positive boys, some that cater exclusively for HIV positive girls, and some that cater for orphans who lost their parents to HIV but who aren’t HIV positive,” he says. “This helps identify and meet each child’s specific needs more easily.”

These homes are located in Naivasha, Mai Mahiu, Nyahururu, Karima Ndunyu Njeru, Machakos, Tharaka Nithi, and Joska.

During the event, Bishop Munyiri was celebrated for the ministry he founded to give homeless children a place to shelter.

On the sidelines of this event, we asked him what makes a man a father and he listed the following five qualities:

  1. Love

A father loves his children unconditionally. He knows that not all may attain his aspirations for them but he still loves them all.

  1. He inspires change and growth

A father inspires his children to keep adapting to change and growing upwards. This is important for the future generations especially.

  1. Accessibility

A good father is accessible to his children. He is open for any meeting with any of them to listen to their experiences and offer a word for them.

  1. He is visionary

A great father is visionary. He sees great things happening in his children’s lives and will go to as far as investing into their lives to actualize these visions.

  1. Fear of God

A great father has the fear of God in him. He is conscious of God’s presence in his life and would do anything to make God happy. He is a man who is after God’s own heart.
