Medical-related courses you can pursue with a KCSE D plain

The Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education mean grade of D is not very appealing to many. In fact, there are certain fields that look impossible to get into with such a grade.

One of these is the medical field that contains medical-related courses that often demand high average scores.

However, there is a way that a resilient grade D material can use to realize their dream of working in the health sector by pursuing medical-related courses.

There are certain medical-related courses whose requirement is the mean grade D plain.

Most of these courses are certificates, after which a candidate can upgrade to diploma and eventually higher diploma or even a degree.

Medical-related Courses you can do with D plain

1. Certificate in Health Records and Information Technology

Certificate in Health Records and Information Technology in service program targets the individuals working in a recognized Health Records department but do not have the required professional qualifications. The minimum entry requirement is KCSE Aggregate grade D+.

In addition, you need at least two years of working experience in a recogniysed Health Records and Information Department, a letter of recommendation from a Health Records and Information Officer of the department, and an appointment letter to your current position The duration of this course is two years.

2. Certificate in Health Promotion for the Deaf (CHPD)

This course is for deaf students only. The minimum entry requirement is a mean grade of D+ in KCSE.

In addition, you must have scored D+ in English or Kenya Sign Language and D plain in Biology. The course is available at all KMTC campuses across the country for a study period of two years.

3. Foundations in Community Health

Foundations in Community Health is a D plain course offered in Kenya Medical Training College. It involves training personnel on the basic foundations about community health.

It can be done by anyone interested in working at the community level. The course is suitable for form four leavers as is a short course done for six months.

As you have noted, it is possible to pursue any of the above three are medical courses with D plain in biology.

4. Certificate in Nutrition and Dietetics

You can also enroll for the Certificate in Nutrition and Dietetics course if you scored a D grade in KCSE. The course is designed to prepare you to become a nutritionist or dietician.

The minimum entry requirement for this course is a KSCE mean grade of D+.

You also need to have scored D+ in English or Kiswahili and a D+ in Biology or Biological Sciences. The course is available at selected KMTC campuses, and it lasts for two years.

Can one do nursing with D plain?

No. The minimal entry requirements for a certificate in Community Health Nursing is a mean grade of C – in KCSE.

However, that should not kill your dream of joining the healthcare team as there are plenty of other courses that you can enroll in with a D+.

Can I do pharmacy with D?

No. KMTC does not offer a certificate course in pharmacy. It only offers a Diploma in Pharmacy in selected campuses around the country.

The minimal entry requirements for Diploma in Pharmacy are a KCSE mean grade of C plain, with a C plain in English or Kiswahili, Chemistry/Physical Sciences, and Biology or Biological sciences.

In addition, one needs to have a C plain in any of the following-Physics/ Physical Sciences or Mathematics. The course is done on a full-time basis for three years.
