Hassan Joho: I pulled myself from D- in KCSE to 2 degrees, Sh. 2.3 billion wealth

Former Governor of Mombasa Ali Hassan Joho has disclosed that he is worth Sh. 2.36 billion. Joho made the disclosure when he appeared to be vetted for the position of Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs by the National Assembly Committee on Appointments.

Joho attributed his wealth to properties and business shareholding within his family. “[My wealth consists of] largely developed and undeveloped property, which includes my homes in Mombasa, Vipingo, Malindi, and Nairobi. Shareholding in some property holdings, shareholding in family businesses, valuables and cash at bank,” he said.

During the vetting, Hassan Joho further disclosed that he had scored the grade of D- (D Minus) in his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations. He however said that he had overcome this grade by doing a bridging course that enable him to acquire two degrees.

“I had a D (minus) but I have managed to turn that around,” said Joho, adding that he will soon be graduating with a Masters degree. He is pursuing a Leadership for the 21st Century Degree at Harvard Kennedy School of Government Executive Education. He said that currently, he holds a Bachelor of Commerce and a Bachelor of Business Administration.

“I ventured into business after I completed secondary school and sat for my KCSE. I set up a clearing and forwarding company in Mombasa, then moved into fintech, real estate, and largely logistics,” said Joho.

“In 2006, I did a bridging course to enable me to join the university. I completed a diploma in 2007 and graduated from Kampala University in 2013. Thereafter, I earned another degree at Gretsa University and then enrolled in the Harvard Kennedy School of Government.”
