I quit my IT Technician job to start flower farming: Peter Murimi

A fresh graduate with a diploma in Information Technology,  Murimi was lucky to land a gig as an IT technician in a large flower farming company. Little did he know that his career would take a different lane that would see his life transform in all dimension. While at the flower farming company he learned the basics of flower farming and exporting. With time he was able to wrap his head around the finer details on how to package flowers for exportation, how to get an auction number, how to be a middleman in selling the flowers from local farmers to his boss.

Working as an IT technician, Murimi would earn sh.18,500 a month, but from selling 40,000 stems from farmers to his boss he would pocket sh. 200,000. Murimi saw it wise to quit his job and concentrate full time on flower farming. The potential of making more money in this venture motivated him to form Multigrow Farmers Group with 86 flower farmers on board. They expanded their market base and flower variety over a short period of time, with direct importations into the Netherlands through FloraHolland auction firm

Penetrating the foreign market called for close monitoring of the market trends and demands so as to remain competitive and cut down on huge losses. Multi Farmers Group flowers are exported collectively, but each farmers flowers is sold separately. Selling flowers abroad through FloraHolland auction was much more rewarding than selling in the local market. When the market is ripe and the demand is high, Murimi makes annual revenues of sh. 2,500,000 from his eight acre piece of land. Unlike potatoes which also do well in his region, Murimi attests to flower farming being much more profitable and reliable.

Many flower farmers here have better living standards than non-flower farmers,” he said.

Flower farming has enabled Murimi to explore other lines of business that income generating. Murimi doubles up as a successful agripreneur and  Multigrow officer.  He lives in a stone house,  rolls in a Suzuki, own a cyber cafe and has a pick-up truck to transport flowers.
