4 IEBC Commissioners: Why we disowned Bomas presidential results

The four Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission commissioners who walked out during the release of the presidential results have come out to explain their position.

According to IEBC Vice Chair Juliana Cherera, the presidential results percentages exceeded 100 per cent.

“The aggregation of the results exceeded the 100% mark…the 0.01% translates to 142,000 votes which made a significant difference in the final presidential results,” said Cherera.

She further alleged that the results were announced before results from some constituencies had been released.

“Results lacked important ingredients to support percentage scored by respective candidates. At the end is where there was opaqueness,” she said.

Cherera said that when they demanded that they verify the result, IEBC chairperson Wafula Chebukati declined and insisted on declaring the result.

“The results declared did not indicate total number of registered voters, cast votes and rejected ballot if any. Results lacked important ingredients to support percentage scored by respective candidates,” she said.

“Contrary to the law, the results announced did not declare the total number of registered voters, voters cast and number of rejected votes, if any. In this regard, the results lacked a critical ingredient, namely the number of valid votes cast to support the percentages scored by the 4 candidates. Unless demonstrated otherwise, we know that the percentage is essentially a fraction of the whole number,” said Cherera.
