Importation of cars older than 2011 banned

The Kenya Bureau of Standards has banned the importation of vehicles that are older than seven years. This ban now means that only vehicles that were manufactured in 2011 and above an be imported into the country.

This ban takes effect from January 1 next year.

“We wish to notify all importers of used second hand motor vehicles including returning residents, diplomatic staff and the general public that only motor vehicles that whose year of first registration is from 1st January 2011 and later shall be allowed into the country as from 1st January 2018,” the Kebs notice reads in part.

In Kenya only cars that are seven years old or younger are allowed for importation. This has made inspiring motor owners in Kenya buy cars from neighouring countries such as Uganda.

KEBS further announced that 2010 car models shall be rejected at the port of Mombasa after December 31.

“Further, certificates of roadworthiness for vehicles whose first year of first registration is 2010 will not be valid after 31st December 2017. All vehicles issued with such certificates must have arrived at the port of entry by 31st December 2017. Any 2010 models arriving after 31st Dec 2017 will be deemed not to be complying and shall be rejected at the port of entry,” it added.
