Jesse Mugambi, a young Kenyan student and DJ currently pursuing his master’s degree in the UK at the University of Brighton, has emerged as the winner of a global nightclub competition.
Mugambi won the Sh. 7.6 million (€50,000) by beating over 300 competitors from 50 countries around the world. The competition was dubbed Save the Night.
Jesse’s innovative concept involved creating a nightclub that could transition into a music studio during the day. As a student pursuing a Master’s in Sustainable Design, he noted the pressing need for this dual-purpose space.
He believes it wields the power to assist young Kenyans who face challenges while trying to build their music careers.
“Having faced challenges in pursuing my passion for music, I’m driven by the belief that countless young and old people long for opportunities to explore their musical itch,” he noted.
Jesse Mugambi’s idea named Studio Can-V, will also be applying the use of shipping containers to create the studio and nightclub. The entire design process shall be facilitated by Kenyan creatives with a rich knowledge of the Nairobian culture.
Mugambi hopes that his idea will revolutionize the music industry in Kenya, by giving a breakthrough for artists and music enthusiasts alike.

“We are collaborating with lecturers at the University of Brighton to ensure that our plans are developed sustainably both socially and architecturally,” he stated.
Mugambi’s first priority on his to-do list will be acquiring sustainable shipping containers and sourcing the right labor. The architectural degree holder asserted that the Sh. 7.6 million award would be spent down to the last cent to ensure that the vision becomes a reality.
“I aspire to create those spaces where they can explore their creativity and pursue their musical dreams without constraint.”
