Joey Muthengi replaces Cess Mutungi at Capital FM

Joey Muthengi Capital FM: Media personality Joey Muthengi has rejoined Capital FM. Ms. Muthengi, whose popularity skyrocket while she worked at Royal Media Services’ Citizen TV will be hosting the evening drive show.

She has come in as a replacement for veteran radio presenter Cess Mutungi who recently announced that she is leaving the station.

Ms. Muthengi will be hosting the show alongside Martin Kariuki. “This is the first show and it might be the last! Introducing the newest duo on Capital FM,” the station announced.

Ms. Muthengi was poached from Capital FM by Royal Media Services in 2013. At the time, she was the host of the show Hits Not Homework.

The move comes amidst reports that Capital FM is facing financial difficulties. “Already, several key staffers, among them, Editorial Director Michael Mumo, Special Projects Editor Rob Jillo and presenters Maqbul Mohammed and Charles Kiarie have either left or are serving notice,” says a report on the station that appeared in a local media news blog.

Ms. Muthengi left Citizen late last year after a bitter betting feud between her and the station. She was the host of ‘ Day Break’ and ‘ 10 over 10′.

Apparently, her troubles with the management at Citizen Tv were attributed to her mega betting advertisement deal with Betin. Ms. Muthengi was running betting ads for Betin together with footballer Donald Mariga. This was contrary to the wishes of the top management at Royal Media Services, which runs its own betting firm known as Shabiki.

In January this year, Muthengi landed a new job in the United States. She got a job at an international radio station in Washington DC, United States, just two months after she quit Citizen Tv.

“Joey, English to Africa Service Voice of America has an urgent job request for you, please review on playdesk and accept or decline ASAP,” read part of the email on job offer. VOA offered Muthengi her first internship while she was still in college pursuing media studies. “OMG, Voice of America was my 1st internship while still in college. I can’t even. Look at God” a blissful Joey posted.
