John Mungai: I won a green card, started media house in US despite being class 7 dropout

Despite lacking formal education, John Mungai is a testament that through hard work and determination, anyone can achieve whatever they wish in life.

Mungai, who currently runs a media house in the US, is an epitome of grass to grace, and his journey serves as an inspiration to Kenyans seeking greener pastures abroad.

In an interview with KDTV, Mungai revealed he grew up in a humble background and due to financial challenges, he was unable to complete his primary school education.

He dropped out of school while in class 7 to take up menial jobs to earn an income. He went on to learn several hands-on skills, including tailoring, before moving to Gikomba, Nairobi, to sell second-hand clothes popularly known as Mitumba.

Life in Nairobi, however, became challenging for Mungai, who suffered a financial crisis, forcing him to retreat to the village in the Rift Valley Region.

He continued with the second-hand business before shifting to sell artifacts at a curio shop. The business was, however, short-lived as he was displaced to pave the way for road construction.

Mungai applied for a green card and fortunately, he won in 2003 and was able to travel with his family. Through a fundraiser, he raised the money required for his trip.

“I paid the necessary fee and signed for my family to be allowed into the country. We finalised the process and it’s been more than 18 years now,” he stated.

The father of three is now the CEO of Njung’wa Diaspora Television. He uses the platform to engage with other Kenyans living in the US and other countries.

While in the US, Mungai took up several jobs before buying a truck for delivery services. He revealed that the venture has helped raise his family and sustain them in the US.

Mungai advised Kenyans to put in the effort in their current jobs as they await more opportunities.

“It all requires hard work and enough planning for anyone to succeed,” he remarked.
