MediaMax to fire employees, sell assets as K24 ‘shutdown’ begins

K24 KTN News Merger: K24 employees are a worried lot. This is after it emerged that MediaMax which runs the television station has moved in to trim staff and sell some assets in the wake of a broadcasting deal with Standard Media Group’s KTN News.

Under the deal, K24 will now broadcast news from KTN News. According to emerging reports, an action plan by the MediaMax management dated May 28 shows how Mediamax plans to strip K24 of key assets and employees in a bid to end up with what it will consider a lean workforce. This restructuring is set to take place over the month of June.

“Mediamax has already cancelled leases for Kisumu and Eldoret bureaus as well as the first-floor commercial area at its DSM head office effective June 1. It has also cancelled utilities for these offices, including security and internet services. Employees have been left confused, with talk that some have been asked not to report to work from June 2,” a report that appeared in a local media news outlet said.

The report further claimed that under the new arrangement, fleet will be linked to products, subscription to Holiday Cars has been cut while Little Cab usage and approval will be restructured.

“Studio services will also be big casualties, with termination notices to be issued on June 2 for various services including, among others, studio make-up provided by Make-up Lounge, studio hair styling offered by Articles & Arts and studio dressing by Glams by Cess. In addition, K24 will be terminating all programmes except Punchline hosted Ann Kiguta and K24 in the Morning,” the report said.

MediaMax is owned by the Kenyatta Family. K24 television has failed to break even and return positive revenues despite being in the industry for more than a decade. The station has also tried to previously bring on star media personalities who have all left without raising positive reviews and attracting advertisers. Some of the top presenters who have worked at the station include Betty Kyalo, Franklin Wambugu, and Torome Tirike. K24 KTN News Merger.
