A Kabete police officer killed his wife and five civilians on Tuesday morning before he turned the gun on himself.

According to Kabete Sub-County Police Commander Francis Wahome, the victims of the incident included the cop’s neighbours and boda boda riders. Two more people are still in the hospital with gunshot wounds. An AK-47 rifle with four rounds of ammunition were recovered at the scene of the crime. “We do not know the motive of the incident but we have lost seven people including the officer who died by suicide,” said Wahome.

The incident is said to have happened at J Apartments near N Market, where the police officer, identified as Constable Benson Imbatu, lived with his wife Carol.

Detectives say that some time after 12am, the Kabete police officer, armed with an AK 47, went on the rampage where he shot and killed his wife and five others including two boda boda riders, one of whom is still undergoing treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital.

It was not immediately clear what sparked the shooting spree, with police officers saying that investigations had kicked off to established the late officer’s motive. “He went on a shooting spree pursuing his targets far away from the house,” said a neighbour Jane Wanjiru who hid in her house.
