Kang’ethe who’s wanted in US for Maggie Mbitu’s murder escapes from Nairobi police cell

Michael Kang’ethe, the man who is accused of killing his girlfriend Maggie Mbitu at an airport in US has escaped police custody.

Kang’ethe is reported to have escaped on Wednesday. According to a report that appeared in The Star newspaper on Thursday, Kang’ethe escaped on Wednesday evening. He is said to have been meeting his lawyer when he slipped off and jumped onto a matatu and fled to an unknown destination.

The lawyer was detained after his escape. Top Nairobi police officers led by Nairobi Regional Police Commander Adamson Bungei rushed to the station on learning about the embarrassing escape of a man who has grabbed global headlines.

“We have arrested the four officers who were on duty when he escaped to explain how it happened. It is just embarrassing to us,” said Bungei.

Kang’ethe was being detained at the Muthaiga Police Station pending his court hearing over his extradition to the US to face first-degree murder charges.

It has also been reported that in an attempt to delay his extradition, Kang’ethe has since renounced his American citizenship.

Kang’ethe was arrested by police detectives in January while partying in Westlands.

He had been on the run since November 2023, when he reportedly fled to Kenya from the States. It is alleged that  he murdered Maggie, a nurse, between October 30th and November 1st in Boston.

He went on to stash the body in the car’s boot, where it was later discovered at Boston’s Logan Airport.
