I am facing Gender Based Violence, Meru Governor Kawira’s hubby says

The talk in Meru politics has been ‘Keeping up with the Mwangazas’. Kawira Mwangaza’s husband, Meru County first gentleman and musician Murega Baichu claims that he is being subjected to Gender Base Violence by the MCAs, ever since his wife clinched the top county seat in the 2022 general elections.

The MCAs feel that it is unjust for Mr. Baichu to be traveling in the governor’s car or sleeping at the governor’s official residence, despite being her husband.

Murega Baichu, addressing the media said that it is unfair for him to get banned from getting a lift from his wife’s official ride when she attends various functions.

“I want EACC to help me because after they wrote that letter I am forced to board a bodaboda Chapchap to move around because I am not allowed to enter the governor’s car,” he said.

“The Governor was given an official residence, and now I am told I am not supposed to sleep there because I am not a state officer. I want EACC to help me so that I can know my boundaries,” he added.

The first gentleman claims that he is currently sleeping at a house made from timber that he and his wife built a while back before her election success.

He has urged the Meru MCAs to focus on improving the lives of Meru residents instead of ‘hounding’ him every moment they get.

“I would like the anti-graft watchdog (EACC) to help me so that I can know if I can sleep in the governor’s official residence and also if I qualify to be carried by her official vehicles. As it stands, I think I am a victim of gender-based violence and this is just not limited to females,” he said.

The MCAs complained of nepotism with the new county administration, alleging that governor Kawira Mwangaza is favoring her circle of family and friends to positions in the government.

Kawira appointed Murega Baichu as the Meru Youth Service patron and Hustlers’ Ambassador with no pay. She has also appointed her sister to be one of her three bodyguards.

Addressing the media at Milimani Law Courts, she said that she has not employed her sister as that is the work of the Kenya Police. She only requested her deployment as her bodyguard.

“Is your bodyguard supposed to go through the vetting really? I am entitled to more than three of them, what is wrong with getting one of them to be my sister? I am not her employer, the NPS is,” she strongly argued.
