Crackdown on cars using led lights; Sh. 400,000 fine for cars using VIP flickers

The National Police has launched a nationwide crackdown on illegal led lights that have been mounted on vehicles.

According to police spokesman Bruno Shioso, the police have been ordered to arrest private and public vehicle owners and motorcycle owners who are caught using the illegal led lights.

According to Shioso, those who are arrested will be charged with contravening Section 55 of the Traffic Act.

The Act says as follows: “No vehicle shall be used on a road unless such vehicle and all parts and equipment thereof, including lights and tyres, comply with the requirements of this Act, and such parts and equipment shall, at all times, be maintained in such a condition that the driving of the vehicle is not likely to be a danger to other users of the road or to persons travelling on the vehicle.”

The LED car lights were first banned in 2018 by the National Police. The National Police Service described those who use them as insensitive, saying that they cause untold distress to other road users.

“This is to inform motorists and the general public that all these unlawful modifications will be dealt with as provided for in the Traffic Act,” the National Police said.

However, the ban was not enforced as notorious motorists and motorbike riders installed them in the thousands to the detriment of other road users’ safety.

The police said that the LED car lights that are being targeted are unlawfully equipped lamps, modified illuminating lights, red lights, opaque rear lights, flashing lights, flickering lights, LED illuminating lights, unauthorized sirens and unauthorized red and blue lights.

“The mentioned lights are in contravention of the law since they endanger the lives of road users. All vehicle owners are advised to adhere to the requirements of the law to avoid any inconveniences,” said Shioso.
