Dominic Orina, a Kenyan teacher has been nominated for the Sh. 129 million ($1m) Global Teacher Award that celebrates exceptional educators.
Orina, a teacher at Kugerwet Primary School in Konion Constituency, Bomet County is part of the 50 selected from over 5,000 nominations and applications from 89 countries around the world.
The Global Teacher Award that is organized by the AKS Education Awards aims to honor teachers who demonstrate innovation, dedication, and outstanding achievements in inspiring students and advancing education worldwide.
Orina was recognized for his contribution to training students on smart farming through the School’s 4K Club, a project that is currently generating income for the school.
Further, the teacher who has been posting his work on social media has also been supporting needy students and inviting well-wishers to contribute items such as school uniforms, shoes, and other essentials for the children.

Keep me in your prayers to carry the trophy home by the end of the competition,” Orina stated after receiving the news of his nomination.
”My students, parents, teachers, and the entire community let us share this blessing. Improving people’s lives through education is our priority. Glory be to God,” he added.
This is the second time a Kenyan has been nominated for the award. In 2019, Mwalimu Peter Tabichi, a Kenyan Science Teacher, was nominated for the award and won.
Tabichi from Keriko Mixed Day Secondary School in Pwani Village, Nakuru County transformed the lives of 480 students through support to underprivileged students, developed science projects that gained international recognition, and improved academic performance in his school.
Other nominees from Africa include. Ali Alfred Mokgalaka of South Africa, Faith Aku Dzakpasu from Ghana, Kayode Adewale from Nigeria, Mahamba Sebastian Ihonde from Tanzania, Stella Gyimaah Larbi from Ghana, and Tionge Mtambo from Malawi.
