Faith Kipyegon: I am winning because of my husband's love and support

On Sunday July 7, Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon broke her own 1500m World Record with a new time of 3:49:04 in Paris during the Diamond League meet. This was a new milestone on the 2023 tracking year in which Faith Kipyegon had an incredible season.

Last year on September 16, Kipyegon won the 1500 metres Diamond League final in Eugene, Oregon, United States. This came barely three weeks after she won the 1500 metres and 5000 metres races in Budapest, Hungary, during the 2023 World Athletics Championship.

Kipyegon has been attributing her immense success in athletics to her husband. For instance, Kipyegon dedicated her victory to her World Championship victory to her husband, whom she described as her pillar of support.

Kipyegon defeated Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands to complete a double at the World Athletics Championship competition that started on August 19th 2023 and concluded on August 27, 2023.

She dedicated her 1,500 metres gold to her coach and the 5,000 metres gold to her hubby. She described her 5,000 metres gold as special.

“I dedicate this gold medal to my husband, he has been supportive towards this success and being an amazing husband,” said Kipyegon.

Kipyegon is married to Timothy Kitum who is also an athlete. The couple is blessed with one daughter.

In a span of months, she has broken three world records. She is the current world record holder for the 1,500 metres, mile, and 5,000 metres.

She broke the women’s world 1,500 metres record with a time of 3:49.11 in Florence on 2 June 2023 that had been set by Ethiopia’s Genzebe Dibaba in Monaco on 17 July 2015.

“There’s still more to come,” said Kipyegon after taking down the eight-year-old record. “I’m still working on running faster than that, faster than 3:49.”

She then followed this up with the Women’s world 5,000 metres record with a time of 14:05.20 in Paris on 9 June 2023. This record had been set by Ethiopia’s Letesenbet Gidey in Valencia on 7 October 2020.

“It has been an incredible year and I think I have closed the season in style, but I still have the Diamond League to come so I’m hoping for the best and just close my season in a beautiful way,” said Kipyegon.
