KUCCPS: 7 common mistakes students make when applying for courses

The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has released seven mistakes that it has observed to be the most commonly made by students applying for courses on the KUCCPS portal. This comes as the deadline for applying courses for the September 2025 intake draws closer. This deadline is set for April 30, 2025.

According to the placement organization, the seven common mistakes that students make are as follows:

1). Filling the contact form with incorrect phone numbers: If you fill the contact form with incorrect details, you risk missing out on important KUCCPS communication that is sent to applicants periodically through the contacts they submitted. Ensure that you double check and confirm the contact information you have listed.

2). Leaving courses in the Course Basket without submitting an application: Application does not end at the Course Basket. You must complete and submit an application to be considered. To submit, click the “Application/Revision” button, then “Apply Now”.

3). Applying for one programme and leaving other choices blank: Applicants are allowed to apply for up to four programmes. Applying for only one programme limits your chance of placement to only one. Make sure that you select up to four programmes that match your strengths, qualifications and interests.

4). Applying for the same course in all the choices: This is a risk especially for applicants interested in competitive courses like Medicine, Nursing and Engineering. The organization says that you should have different options to minimize the risk of missing out.

5). Selecting only one course in one institution: Applying for only one course in one institution limits your chances of being placed. Expand your scope and target different courses at different institutions.

6). Arranging courses randomly in the application form: When applying, ensure you arrange the courses in your order of priority, with Choice No. 1 being your most preferred course and No. 4 being your least preferred. Otherwise, you could miss your preferred course.

7). Using M-Pesa transaction ID to submit application instead of eCitizen account: Use the eCitizen account to submit. (eCitizen account is indicated in the middle of the M-Pesa payment confirmation SMS and is made up of alphabetical letters only.)
