Standard Media Group boss Laban Cliff Onserioy has been arrested after he was busted with an explosive at a church in Nairobi Holy Family Basilica.
Following the arrest, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations is seeking to detain the journalist for a period of five days to pave way for investigations.
The investigations will be carried out by the Anti Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) and will be seeking to establish what Onserio was doing with the explosive that was found in his vehicle.
It is alleged that the journalist who is the Chief of Staff at Standard Media Group was found with a flash-bang training system grenade which he was using to threaten people at basement two of the Holy Family Basilica church building in Nairobi CBD.
“The respondent was arrested by a multi-agency team who responded at the scene after receiving information that there was a terror threat,” a report said.
“He had not made a declaration to the security guards that he was in possession of the Flashbang training system grenade.”
It was not clear what Onserio had carried the explosive for or what he intended to do with it.
Reports say that Onserio had parked his car at the facility to attend the Solfest Music Festival at the KICC. He later returned to pick it up on Sunday morning while visibly drunk.
“His car was parked at level two, but he went up to level three where he started hitting on a woman who was in the company of other people. An altercation ensued and he started telling them that he is a soldier from the British Army hence untouchable,” one of the guards told the media.
The guards called the police who conducted a search in his Nissan X-trail and recovered a stun grenade, a pocket phone model GA-25 and two I-phones.
