Mary Muiru: Graduate who scored A in KCSE begs for help after unsuccessful job search

Mary Muiru, a graduate from Egerton University is appealing for help after years of unsuccessful job search.

Her photo went viral on social media after she was captured holding a placard along Thika Road on Thursday. The placard contained her qualifications, academic credentials, and phone number.

Muiru who spoke to a local daily revealed she attained grade A in her Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE), earning her a slot at Egerton University.

“I got an A in the 2013 KCSE exams and enrolled at Egerton University the following year, pursuing Actuarial Science,” she explained.

Despite graduating in 2019 with a Second-Class Upper, efforts to secure a decent job were futile for Muiru who has been relying on casual jobs to make ends meet.

She revealed she did various jobs including doing promotions at a local supermarket, sales, and business development, positions that were all temporary.

“The highest I was ever paid was Ksh20,000 monthly.” She said.

Muiru added that the lack of growth in these positions forced her to look for better opportunities, but she has since faced numerous rejections and lack of responses despite making over 2,000 job applications.

“I come from a humble background so my family is not in a position to help. I thought about it (begging on the streets) for quite some time and decided to just do it,” she added.

The idea has bore positive fruits as she has so far received several calls from potential employers seeking her expertise.

Besides Actuarial Science, Muiru also has skills in various fields including Google Data Analytics, Data Analytics and Visualisation, Advanced SQL, Excel, and Microsoft Power BI.
