The Ministry of Health has released over Sh. 965 million to settle monthly salary arrears for 3,747 medical interns. Among the recipients are 826 Medical Officers, 274 Pharmacists, 71 Dentists, 140 Clinical Officers, 1,185 Nursing Officers, and 1,251 diploma-level Clinical Officer Interns.
Cabinet Secretary for Health Dr. Deborah Barasa announced that of the total amount, Sh. 326.6 million has been allocated to settle arrears for Medical Officer Interns, Dental Officer Interns and Pharmacist Interns.
Furthermore, a total of Sh528.6 million will be used to clear salary arrears for Nursing and Clinical Officer Interns, while Sh110.7 million will cover their regular monthly payments.
“This 100% payment ensures that all posted interns in the specified cadres receive their dues without delay, demonstrating the Ministry’s dedication to addressing the welfare of healthcare workers,” the Ministry said.
“Internship programs are a critical component of Kenya’s healthcare system, providing hands-on experience to bridge the gap between the theory and practice. By ensuring regular remuneration, the Ministry affirms its commitment to fostering a conducive environment for professional growth, thereby enhancing the quality of care delivered to Kenyans,” Dr Barasa said in a statement.

Dr. Barasa requested interns to reach out to their respective departments for any clarifications about the payments. She noted that prompt disbursement of these funds would ensure interns are compensated on time, supporting the ministry’s efforts to enhance healthcare service delivery nationwide.
“We extend our gratitude to the interns for their resilience and dedication to service delivery in healthcare facilities across the country. Their contribution of interns remains vital in achieving Universal Health Coverage –UHC and advancing Kenya’s health agenda,” added the CS.
The CS reiterated her dedication to addressing unresolved matters and other challenges within the health sector. She insisted that the ongoing discussions with Healthcare Unions aim to finalize the respective Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs) in adherence to legal requirements and court directives.
