How to send and receive money via Western Union, Money Gram in Kenya

Western Union and Money Gram Kenya are two of the most locally popular modes of sending money locally and abroad. Most Kenyans, though, do not know how they can easily transact through these channels. To begin with, it is important to note that these channels are operated through authorized agents. In Kenya, these agents are licensed commercial banks. One of the best banks to send and receive money through either Western Union or Money Gram in less than ten minutes is the Co-operative Bank. And to show you how to send and receive money through Co-op bank, we break down the few steps you will need to follow:

Money Gram Kenya

Co-op bank is an authorized agent for Money Gram services. These services can be accessed from any of the bank’s branches countrywide, Co-op Kwa Jirani and Saccos. It is important to note that your name on the transfer record must exactly match your name as it appears on your ID. Otherwise you may be delayed or be unable to pick up your funds.

Money Gram Kenya makes receiving money transfers easy and convenient plus, with the same day service, your money can arrive as soon as 10 minutes. To receive money:

  1. Request for the reference number – The person sending you money will receive a reference number when the transaction is completed. Ask for the reference number to make it easier and faster to pick up your money.
  2. Visit your nearest Co-operative bank branch or selected co-op kwa jirani agents or Saccos- Take your reference number and your national Identity card, a valid passport or ID to pick up your money.
  3. Complete the remittance form – available at our branches countrywide.

    2. Once verified, you will receive your money (usually in local currency (Kenya shillings))

To send money via Money Gram:

  1. Visit the nearest Co-operative bank branch and bring your national ID card, a valid passport or an ID.
  2. Complete a simple remittance form where you will indicate:  the amount you wish to send, destination country, and the name of the person you intend to send to.
  3. The agent/teller will calculate for you the cost of the transaction and process the transaction.
  4. You’ll receive a receipt and reference number for the transaction. Save both for your records.
  5. Contact the person receiving your money transfer and let them know the transfer has been sent and provide the Reference Number

Western Union

You can send and receive Money locally or around the globe within minutes via Western Union at a Co-op bank branch.

To send money via Western Union:

  1. Visit the nearest Co-operative bank branch.
  2. Complete a simple remittance form where you will indicate:  the amount you wish to send, destination country, and the name of the person you intend to send to.
  3. Give the teller the completed form with the applicable funds (including transaction fee). Pay with cash or you may debit your Co-op bank account.
  4. The agent/teller will process the transaction and give you a receipt and MTCN number for the transaction
  5. Contact the person receiving your money transfer and let them know the transfer has been done and provide the MTCN for them to receive the money.
  6. Save your receipts for the record.

To receive money via Western Union:

  1. Request for the MTCN (tracking number) – The person sending you money will receive a tracking number when the transaction is completed. Ask them for the MTCN to make it easier and faster to pick up your money.
  2. Visit your nearest Co-op bank branch or selected co-op kwa jirani agents or selected Sacco – Take your MTCN and your national Identity card, a valid passport or a government issued ID to pick up your money.
  3. Complete the remittance form – available at our branches countrywide.

    • Once verified, you will receive your money (usually in local currency (Kenya shillings) )

You can also receive funds directly into your account or to your mobile wallet if the sender indicated so when sending the money. Always remember that your name on the transfer record must exactly match your name as it appears on your ID. Otherwise you may be delayed or be unable to pick up your funds.
