Kenyan engineer who washed dishes as first US job, now serving in US Navy

Co-Op post

Moses Ngotho Githinji is among the many Kenyans who serve in foreign militaries such as in the UK, US and other countries.

The Oregon-based navy man hails from Kirinyaga County, in Kenya. Living in Kenya, he had never imagined that his life would pan out and lead to having a recruitment role in the US Navy.

Hosted by Jeremy Damaris on his YouTube channel, Githinji revealed that he packed his bags for the US with his family in 2011 after winning a green card. His first job in the US was at a restaurant washing dishes.

While in Kenya, Githinji resided in Juja and worked as an engineer for a local company. However, upon his arrival in the US to pursue a similar career, he was informed that he did not meet criteria.

“You know how things get when you are abroad, I started washing dishes before I got another job,” he stated.

Afterwards, he landed another packaging job at a warehouse. This was where he met a Ghanaian man who toyed with the idea of him joining the Navy. Captivated by the idea, he decided to give it a shot despite previously lacking any desire for the military.

His motivation stemmed from the need to find a sustainable means to support his family. Githinji’s wife was pursuing a nursing course. To make inroads on the application, Githinji sought a recruiter’s help to apply.

“I made sure I had all the necessary documents to secure my slot in the Navy. My recruiter was impressed by my commitment,” he narrated.

Githinji joined the Navy in 2013 after completing the necessary training. Notably, the recruitment process in Kenya and the US are different from each other. He observed that the US military was not as strict as the KDF when it came to dental requirements.

Prior to joining the US Navy, his family’s main concern was the potential deployment to war, in fear over his safety. However, he assured them that he would strive for a successful career without being harmed.

He served in the Navy until 2018 when he transitioned to a recruiting role. In this capacity, he assists younger people interested in enlisting and joining the service.

Moses Ngotho has played a crucial role in recruiting young men into the Navy. He insists that success in the Navy requires patience and discipline. Citizens aged 17 or older have the opportunity to join and enjoy the benefits offered by the Navy.

“To join the military, I advise that it best to work with a recruiter who understands you,” Githinji who operates in Oregon stated.

During his military service, he has been pursuing a course in Cyber Security, with his graduation expected in 2024. All associated expenses are covered by the Navy.

He encouraged Kenyans to apply for the US military, noting that he was more than willing to help them through all the procedures in his capacity as a recruiter.
