How to apply for the most affordable and reliable boda boda insurance in Kenya

Motorcycles, popularly known as Boda Boda, are one of the most preferred means of transport for short distances in Kenya, with more than 2.4 million Boda Bodas currently in operation.

However, the rising number of accidents involving Boda Bodas has left people questioning their safety and calling for urgent action to curb the menace.

According to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), 431 lives were lost in motorcycle crashes between January and March 2025—an average of five deaths every day.

NTSA cautioned boda boda operators to observe road safety rules including wearing protective gears such as helmets when in transit.

Various stakeholders have also called for measures to restore sanity in the boda boda sector to ensure safety of both the rider and passenger.

And to stay protected should the unexpected happen, insurance firms have stepped up to provide financial security for boda boda riders.

For instance, the Cooperative Bank of Kenya has unveiled an insurance cover for both private and commercial motorcycle operators.

The motorcycle covers the motorcycle itself and also provides personal accident insurance for the rider as an enhancement.

Commercial boda bodas can get a six-month coverage for only Sh6,000 or a 12-month coverage for Sh12,108. For private boda bodas, the charges are Sh7,081 for 12 months.

Any person over 18 years and with a valid driving license is eligible for the covers.
