Salary and allowances your MP earns every month

Do you know how much money your Member of Parliament pockets every month? Is it a million shillings, over a million shillings or under a million shillings?

Well, currently, the bicameral Parliament has 349 members in the National Assembly and 67 in the Senate, excluding the Speakers. This brings the total number of lawmakers in the two houses to 416.

How much does an MP earn per month in Kenya?

The Parliamentary Service Commission(PSC) currently spends a minimum Sh. 3.54 billion annually or Sh. 295.36 million monthly on their salaries.

This means that every month, each MP earns a basic salary of Sh. 710,000. Each MP is also entitled to Sh. 20 million mortgage with 3 per cent interest.

There are a number of allowances that push their basic pay to minimums of about Sh. 1,378, 000. These allowances include mileage, sitting, responsibility perks.

In addition to these lucrative allowances, MPs also enjoy a Sh. 5 million official car grant scheme that is supposed to enable them to buy luxury cars every five-year term, a personal car loan from the government of as much as Sh. 7 million repayable at an interest rate of three per cent interest.

Your MP is also entitled to a weekly mileage allowance of Sh. 109 per kilometre for as many as 750 kilometres per week and monthly car maintenance allowance of Sh. 356,525.

But that’s not enough remuneration. Your MP also receives a generous medical allowance that also covers their spouses and as many as four children under  25 years.

Other allowances that your MP is entitled to include airtime, group life and personal accident cover, travel and notably, allowances for attending Parliament and sitting in committees.

Parliament has however been disputing the amounts that MPs are reported to earn, saying that MPs earn a little over half  million shillings which is taxable.

“Every Member of Parliament is entitled to a salary of Sh. 532, 500 which is also taxable,” parliament said in a statement in 2019.
