Murathe: Sh 25 million Jirongo deposited in my account was debt repayment

Former member of parliament and Jubilee vice chairperson David Murathe has come out to defend the millions of cash controversial politician Cyrus Jirongo.

This is after Murathe and COTU boss Francis Atwoli were summoned by the Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission (EACC) to explain how and why millions of money were deposited into their accounts by Jirongo.

According to Murathe, the deposit of Sh. 25 million was a debt repayment that Jirongo owed him.

“I maintain that the Sh. 25 million transaction between me and Cyrus Jirongo was a debt payoff. I’m not involved in what the rest were doing with the county. What I know is Jirongo owed me money and I was paid. Where he got it from is none of my business,” said Murathe.

Murathe claimed that his summoning by the EACC was political witch-hunt because of his affiliation with the Azimio la Umoja coalition.

“This EACC Sermon is political harassment and diversionary tactics because i never supported their master,” he alleged.

Murathe spent more than two hours at the anti-graft agency offices and emerged to say he did not know why he was being taken through a media-publicized investigation by the EACC.

In a statement, the politician said EACC had asked him to explain a Sh25 million amount paid to him around July 23, 2020 through a law firm for a company called Kuza Farms Limited owned by Jirongo.

He admitted receiving the money in two instalments of Sh. 18 million and Sh. 7 million around July 23, 2020.

Kuza Farms had paid the money from Sh. 250 million it received from Nairobi City County as payments for the land where AEF Reuben Primary School, a dispensary and a police station stand on.
