We were kicked out of Nairobi’s Kilimanjaro Hotel because we’re black

Co-Op post

A Kenyan woman has come out to share how she was kicked out of Kilimanjaro Hotel together with her friends on the basis of her skin colour.

The Kenyan woman who was identified as Gladys Nelly narrated how she and her friends were asked to move out of the hotel because there was an Arab man and his daughter who wanted to occupy the table they had occupied. The hotel is located along Banda Street in Nairobi. Here is what she said:

“I’ve heard about Racism and colorism in Kenyan restaurants but I have never experienced it until today.

We went to KILIMANJARO Restaurant on Banda street and took one of the tables on the Balcony and the menus were brought but before we could order one of the waiters asked us to leave the table because he said an Arab and his 4 year old daughter wanted to sit at that exact spot.

We started to protest because how can they ask us to move and then the story changed to that the Arab man already reserved by calling. We knew that was a lie. He just wanted that specific table.

This waiter was rude and practically yelling at us by this point. He then called the manager to tell him to ask us to leave and this time the claim was that we needed to go because yesterday we stayed at the same spot; table 65 for 4 hours and we made them lose so many customers.

Yes, we were there the day before and had spent Sh. 4,470. We were not there sitting for free.

We just left because we didn’t want to cause a scene in front of the Arab man and his child. We couldn’t believe that this could happen to us in our own country.”

  1. I feel sorry what happened to you but also i understand the concern of the owner as time is money and he got so many bills to pay rent, workers and so on . Since you happen to , confess by urself that u were in the restaurant sitting over 4 hours the brevious day of which u claim it wasn’t free and u paid for it. I will totally disagree with you because in a restaurant 30 to 45 minutes maximum is enough to eat and give other space to fill there bellies instead of hanging around after buying a cup of tea for ages to come. I think that’s disrespectful behavior at the same time using around the racesim card . To me i pure see as a business related issues. The owner wants to make money and you want to hang around to kill time which unfair. Go to uhuru Park
