New NTSA charges that have left Kenyans in shock

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has proposed charges that are higher by up to 3,900 per cent for its services.

The new proposed NTSA charges that have left Kenyans in shock will see motorists who want to change the colour of their vehicle cough up Sh. 20,000 from the current fee of Sh. 500.

At the same time, Kenyans who want to start a used motor vehicle dealership will pay licence fees of Sh. 100,000 from the current fees of Sh. 4,200. This will be equal to an increase of 2,282 per cent. Used motor vehicle dealers who want to renew their licences will pay Sh. 50,000 up from the current fees of Sh. 4,200.

If you damage or lose your logbook, you will pay NTSA Sh. 10,000 for a replacement up from Sh. 2,500. If you lose or damage your driving license, you will pay NTSA Sh. 1,000 up from the current Sh. 500.

A driver who wants to convert their foreign license will be asked to pay Sh. 10,000 up from the current Sh. 1,000.

Transfer of motor vehicle ownership for a vehicle with an engine capacity (cc) of less than 1,000cc will now cost Sh. 10,000 up from the current fees of Sh. 1,660. Ironically, transfer of vehicles in this category will be more expensive than transfer of ownership for vehicles in the 1,001cc to 1200cc category.

The cost of getting a new normal vehicle number plate has been increased to Sh. 5,000 from the current Sh.  3,000. A speed limiter has been hiked to Sh. 150,000 up from the current Sh. 50,000.

In addition, Class A driving schools will be renewing their licenses at a cost of Sh. 50,000 up from the current cost of Sh. 20,000. Class C driving schools will renew their licenses at a cost of Sh. 10,000 from the current cost of Sh. 5,000.
