Primary school teachers selected to upgrade their Primary Teacher Education (PTE) certificates will not be issued with regular Diploma and Degree certificates that are issued in colleges and universities at the end of their training.
According to a top Teachers Service Commission (TSC) official who spoke to Teachers Arena, the teachers will be issued with a Teacher Professional Development (TPD) certificate that will highlight key competencies attained.
The upgrading Initiative, which is fully sponsored by the World Bank, is designed to equip teachers with new professional competencies required under the CBC framework.
The training covers a wide range of areas, including learner-centered teaching methodologies, assessment strategies, integration of technology in teaching, and handling of junior school learners transitioning from upper primary.
Teachers who will successfully complete the modules will get deployed to teach Grades 7, 8 and 9 learners. TSC says that 38,849 P1 teachers across the country qualify for the upgrade programme.
The selected teachers are those who attained a minimum mean grade of C+ (plus) in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination, with at least C+ in two teaching subjects.
