KQ: why we charge Sh. 230,000 to fly to London while our rivals charge Sh. 88,000

0

Kenya Airways has defended its higher air ticket prices relative to other airlines. This follows a fare comparison done by the Centre for Aviation showed that KQ charged about $2,300 (about Sh230,000) on the Nairobi-London route, compared to Ethiopian Airline’s charge of $949 (about Sh94,900) and South African Airways’ $887 (about Sh88,700).

KQ chief executive Mbuvi Ngunze on Thursday said the airline’s tickets are only priced higher during peak demand, when travellers book late and according to quality of services.

“Remember we are coming off a fairly high season, the peak period of travel — from June through to August and early September,” Mr Ngunze told a press briefing in Nairobi, adding that the airline was competitive, currently flying between “10,000 and 12,000 people every day.”

“You could find incidents where, say, eight ticket prices have been booked in the last minute which could trigger that (higher fee), but it is not representative of the average price.” Among the poor decisions being cited is the lack of a fallback plan for the ambitious ‘Mawingu’ expansion project and bad decisions on leasing of aircraft.

It’s time sugarcane farmers moved on to better economic activities

0

The following opinion piece is by Jack Okinyi, a media consultant.

“Murder your darlings” is a popular advice on writing skills that is oft attributed to William Cuthbert Faulkner, an American writer and Nobel Laureate. This expression does not in any way suggest that literally killing your kids or people you care about will make you a better writer.

Rather, it is a metaphor for just how you should act while revising your writing. The idea is to proceed objectively and without sentiment. Just like you would if you were to kill a loved one.

In other words, the writer must be alive to the dangers of him using personal favourite elements which may hold special meaning to him but can cause readers to roll their eyes in disgust.

The same advice is opportune for anyone involved in the torturous business of growing sugarcane and processing sugar in Kenya. It can also apply to the incurable romantics trying to save the “Pride of Africa” – Kenya Airways.

Both issues have attracted a lot of comment, mostly emotional and us-versus-them grandstanding that has become symptomatic of the state of political and economic discourse in the country.

Allow me to address the sugar industry issue because I am somewhat a stakeholder given that the South Nyanza (SONY) Sugar Factory in Awendo, Migori County is merely two kilometres from my rural home.

Also, my immediate family, relatives, village mates and virtually all residents of Awendo constituency depend on the sugar industry in one way or the other.

That the setting up of the SONY Sugar Factory in 1979 tremendously altered the economic status of my home area cannot be gainsaid. Everyone I know of has benefited from sugarcane farming, the first commercial farming venture in South Nyanza.

Before then, Awendo town was a trading centre with less than a dozen shops. My village was just a typical rural setting with hundreds grass thatched houses and few corrugated iron sheet roofs.

Some 30 years or so later, my village is truly middle class. Long metallic poles hoisting TV aerials are found in virtually home. Red tiled roofs and colourful iron sheets have replaced the grass as a roofing solution. Good schools like Sony Complex have also come up.

My village actually experienced rural electrification more than 30 years ago, thanks to it being close to SONY.

However, sugarcane farming needs euthanasia now. Why?

Sugarcane takes at least 18 months to mature but you will be lucky if your cane is harvested within 24 months. Then, wait at least another six months to be paid.

A well husbanded farm gets you some 40-45 tonnes of sugarcane per acre. The factory pays only Sh3,000 per tonne gross.

Then it deducts a large chunk for services like land tilling, providing seed cane, fertilizer, harvesting and transport (provided your weeded the farm yourself).

Another animal by the name Sony Outgrowers Company (SOC) also takes a percentage of your earnings for god knows why.

After 30 months of toiling, you take home something between Sh60,000 and Sh80,000 per acre.

That translates to about Sh2,000 per month. Yes that’s right.

Now show me a person in this country can feed and school his family on Sh2,000 a month and I will show you a magician.

Growing tea, coffee, potatoes, maize, beans, kunde, mrenda, tomatoes soya beans or even nappier grass will earn my villagers 10 times more if they abandoned this sugarcane madness.

That is why the time is ripe for my villagers and other suffering farmers to get serious with life and rid their farms of sugarcane.

The sugar industry benefits no one in Kenya. The farmers are suffering from low returns. The government wastes money year in year out bailing collapsing sugar factories and other Kenyans are forced consume ridiculously expensive sugar to sustain the loss making industry.

Let us stop this sentimental archaism. We can do better than engage is this sugar producing business.

Review: Subaru Impreza 2008

0

The following review was first published on Caza.

The car’s body set and chassis have been entirely redesigned and look different from previous models. The new Impreza’s interior is more spacious and more refined; it comes in sedan and hatchback body styles.

The 2008 Subaru Impreza has a 2.5litre engine and all-wheel-drive system. There are four main trim levels: 2.5i, Outback Sport, WRX and WRX STI.

Interior

Subaru did a great job in improving the interior of this car. The interior materials are high quality and nicely designed, the dashboard layout is simple and stylish.

They have gotten rid of the plastic trims and gaudy colors, and included touch-screen GPS system, a six-disc ten speaker stereo and satellite radio.

Exterior

Compared to the previous model, the new Subaru Impreza has much cleaner lines and a more pleasant look overall. But to Subaru enthusiasts this is not a good thing because the car is losing its identity.
At first glance, the new Impreza could be confused with other car makes and models.

Performance

All the engines of the 4 types send power to all the four wheels. Transmission for all but STI are 4-speed automatic with manual shifting control or 5-speed manual. The STI has a 6-speed manual only.

The fuel economy for 2008 Subaru Impreza is 8.5 kmpl city and 12 kmpl  highway for 2.5i and Outback Sport models, 8.8 kmpl city and 11 Kmpl highway for the WRX and 7 kmpl city/10 Kmpl for the WRX STI.
They all come with a 2.5l engine.

Driving and handling

The previous Impreza was more fun to drive than this one, especially the WRX. The new model feels soft, but you will notice big difference driving especially when cornering, it is less exciting.

The car accelerates quite well but runs out of steam a little early. If you are an enthusiast we suggest you buy the one with manual transmission, the acceleration in the 4-speed automatic is slow.

For enthusiast the WRX STI will give you exactly what you want; a firm, communicative suspension, powerful brakes, quick steering response and fast acceleration whenever the throttle is tickled.

Pros

Standard all-wheel drive, WRX and WRX STI’s punchy turbocharged engines, roomy seating in front and rear.

Cons

Missing some higher-end convenience features, behind-the-times transmissions, below-average fuel economy, sleepy styling except for extroverted STI.

Buuri roads to be tarmacked

0

The Kenya Rural Roads Authority has opened the tender for the upgrade of the Kisima-Kibirchia-Kiirua-Ruiri road in Buuri constituency to bitumen standards. The tarmacking of the road is expected to be a major milestone for the constituency and big score for the area MP Mr. Boniface Kinoti Gatobu. Speaking to Bizna, Mr. Gatobu expressed hope that the road construction works will start soon. “We are expecting the contractors to come to the site any time from now,” he said.

Last week, engineers from the ministry of roads and transport toured the area together with potential road contractors in an examination of the roads that have been designated for upgrade to bitumen standards.

Mr. Gatobu added the tarmacking of the road will usher in a new face of development that will open up the Buuri economy to the larger Meru County. “We are excited. It has been a long wait and finally upgrading of the roads to bitumen standards are finally set to kick off. This is a historical achievement for the people of Buuri,” he said. Additionally, the tarmacking of the road is expected to ease movement of agricultural goods including maize, beans, bananas, pigeon peas, cow peas and horticultural crops from the constituency to the main Nanyuki-Meru highway.

Further, potential contractors may access the detailed tender documents for the road construction may be found on the Kenya Rural Roads Authority government website: www.kerra.go.ke.

5 key money lessons from world’s youngest self-made female billionaire

0

At age 31, Elizabeth Holmes is the world’s youngest self-made female billionaire. Her uncle’s death from cancer moved her to develop a way to detect diseases earlier. She dropped out of Stanford University her sophomore year and founded Theranos in 2003 to make cheaper, easier-to-use blood tests. With a virtually painless prick of the finger and a few drops of blood, her labs can quickly run a multitude of tests at a fraction of the price of commercial labs. Holmes raised $400 million from venture capitalists in 2014, valuing the company at $9 billion; her 50% stake is worth $4.5 billion.

Her company Theranos was valued at $9 billion. At the time of publishing, its 31-year-old founder and CEO was worth $4.5 billion, making her the world’s youngest female self-made billionaire.

Women

Here are five life lessons we can learn from the Californian girl who made saving others her life’s mission.

1. Overnight success is a myth

In her commencement speech at Pepperdine University in May 2015, Elizabeth recalled how she started Theranos alone in a tiny basement. She gradually moved to a tiny office that also functioned as a laboratory and that could fit no more than six people. Later, they moved to a bigger office.

“Over the entry to one of the buildings was a sign that read, “Success is not the result of spontaneous combustion. You must set yourself on fire.” We named our project The Edison because we felt we would have to fail 10,000 times to get it to work the 10001. We set ourselves on fire. There is no short cut.”

2. When a door shuts, knock again. And again.

Elizabeth, who speaks fluent Mandarin, wanted to take summer classes in Mandarin at Stanford. The program does not accept high-school students but she refused to back down and repeatedly called the admissions office until the exasperated program head spontaneously conducted a Mandarin test over the phone.

She was accepted on the spot and went on to complete three years of college Mandarin while still in high school. She later told Glamour that it was like building a company where you make a decision to “figure out to do this, and if they say no to me a thousand times, I am going to keep on trying for the next thousand.”

How Ma3Route found a way to monetise Nairobi’s traffic jams

0

How to end Nairobi’s notorious traffic congestion is a million-dollar debate. It is estimated the Kenyan capital, which ranks among the most congested cities in the world, loses Ksh.37bn (US$357m) annually in fuel consumption, pollution and lost productivity due to endless traffic jams.

There have been many attempts to fix the problem such as construction of new highways, the launch of a commuter rail service and elimination of some roundabouts, but with little success. For example, a recent study revealed just 1% of Nairobi residents use trains daily, despite government spending more than Ksh.400m ($3.9m) on a commuter rail project.

More solutions are in the pipeline, including a Ksh.58bn ($559m) cable car project and a planned Ksh.100bn ($964m) road and rail mass rapid transit system.

But in the meantime, Nairobi residents have to make do with the city’s limited infrastructure coming under strain from a rapidly growing population and an increasing number of cars.

Crowdsourced traffic information

One solution commuters use to navigate traffic is Ma3Route, a platform that crowdsources traffic data. Ma3Route enables commuters to share and access information on the state of traffic flow, road conditions and even accidents.

“It helps people make decisions on which roads not to take,” says Stéphane Eboko, chief revenue officer at Ma3Route. “We have built a community where people talk to each other and trust the information shared. They are using text and landmarks to navigate [traffic] as opposed to maps, which is really vital in cities where not all roads are named.”

Ma3Route was founded in 2012 by tech entrepreneur Laban Okune.

According to Eboko, the platform currently has more than 300,000 daily users engaging on its website, social media accounts and mobile app. Using simple text and photographs, users share their frustrations and random observations. Social media site Twitter is its most popular platform for users seeking to make reports or navigate traffic.

“Twitter works well for us because commuters don’t really need anything fancy, just a message and a photo that helps them decide whether or not to use a particular route,” explains Eboko.

Monetising traffic

Ma3Route generates income from advertising pushed to its users and SMS subscriptions delivered in partnership with a local telecommunications company.

“There are 20,000 people in Nairobi who receive SMS notifications two or more times a day depending on their preference,” says Eboko. “Another revenue stream is data. We have a lot of information on where people go, how they commute, what time of the day they travel. There is a lot that is coming through our algorithm and we enrich that data. This data is useful to corporations, county governments and transport agencies.”

Since May, Ma3Route has been piloting a six month accident mapping project collecting accident reports from users. It plans to release a comprehensive report that could help shape policy decisions on road safety.

Solving mobility challenges in Nairobi is however also attracting many other tech companies, including global giants. Earlier this month Google launched in Kenya its traffic-mapping app Waze. In 2013 multinational IBM introduced a project called Twende Twende (“let’s go” in Swahili) that sends motorists text messages informing them of traffic conditions and recommends routes to avoid congestion.

Eboko notes the development of these solutions is in line with increasing demand for easier mobility. Ma3Route plans to launch in the port city of Mombasa later in the year and eventually to other secondary cities in Kenya.

“We are also looking at expansion outside Kenya in emerging cities across the globe that have infrastructure challenges, traffic issues and growing populations,” says Eboko.

“Many emerging cities in the world are a potential market for us. Think about Mombasa, Lagos, Cairo, Kinshasa – and even cities in India like Mumbai and New Delhi.”

Is the Standard Group a giant on death bed?

0

Yesterday, the Standard Group posted a 91 per cent drop in its 2015 half year pre-tax profit to Sh. 21 million. This was a massive drop considering that in the same period last year, Standard Group posted a half year profit of Sh. 205 million. The group’s management has since come out to direct blame on the digital migration and the staged switch off conducted by three media houses Nation Media Group, The Standard Group and Royal Media Group.

According to the Standard Group’s finances, revenue dropped 7 per cent to Sh. 2.2 billion from Sh. 2.37 billion. In the print category, advertising business went down by 4 per cent while in the television category, it declined by 27 per cent.

The results were released a few weeks after Standard Group launched a 24-hour news station KTN2. The station, which has been relying on the workforce of the old KTN, is yet to start making stable in-roads in the country’s viewership.

Earlier in March this year, the group posted an 8.4 percent rise in pretax profit for 2014 due to growth in print, TV and radio advertising. Profit before tax climbed to 326 million shillings ($3.6 million), while revenue nudged marginally lower. The company said it would pay a final dividend of 0.50 shillings per share, unchanged from the dividend paid in 2013.

Following the poor results recorded yesterday, though, the board of directors did not recommend an interim dividend. The sharp decline in profits comes at a time when Standard Group has been massively axing its workforce in a bid to cut costs. In an exercise that has been aimed at cutting down on its current workforce by 30 per cent, journalists at the group have become an endangered species, with many big name being shown the door over the past few weeks.

Consequently, it has been reported that Standard Group has been forced to take up a Sh. 500 million bank loan to pay the departing employees. Many of the journalists who have left the group include those from its superior rival Nation Media Group. Some of the big names included:

  1. Julius Maina –ME, Special projects
  2. Peter Okong’o (deputy ME, daily)
  3. Dorcas Muga (deputy ME, weekend)
  4. Juma Kwayera –writer, Saturday
  5. Oscar Obonyo – writer, Sunday
  6. Stephen Makabila -writer, Sunday
  7. Kwamboka Oyaro –features editor
  8. Joshua Kemboi- KTN sports editor
  9. George Mulala – Standard photo editor
  10. Peter Choge -sub-editor, Saturday Standard
  11. Terry Mwenda –subeditor, The Standard
  12. Grace Tunya
  13. Sarah kinya -TV producer
  14. Mwanaisha Chidzuga – TV host.

The Standard Group’s market share has been slimming over the recent past, with reports that its newspaper circulation has fallen to sharply, leaving the oldest newspaper in Kenya struggling behind the Daily Nation, X News and The People Daily (PD). According to figures, X News free paper which is released in the evening records a distribution of about 150,000 copies per day, while The People Daily (PD) distributes between 70,000 on weekends and 100,000 on weekdays. Standard Group’s The Standard newspaper on the other hand has been distributing an average of 70,000 copies per day.

Additionally, it has been reported that the Moi family which is associated with the Standard Group’s ownership is currently seeking to bring in a new management, with the current CEO Sam Shollei expected to be shown the door. Former editorial director at the Nation Media Group Mr. Joseph Odindo has been tipped to take over his former position in a bid to resuscitate the paper’s falling fortunes on a four year contract. Mr. Shollei succeeded Mr. Paul Melly in 2012.

Floyd Mayweather’s new Sh. 494 million car

0

Floyd Mayweather recently purchased the second of a planned production run of three CCXR Trevitas that Koenigsegg has created for hyper-rich buyers. The name Trevita translates to “three whites,” representing Koenigsegg’s unique coating solution that turns traditional black carbon-fiber weave into what it calls a sparkling, silvery white.

Billed as a “hypercar” — supposedly superior to a supercar — it was the 38-year-old’s chosen mode of transport for his journey to the Mayweather Boxing Club Wednesday for his latest training session ahead of his September 12 fight against Andre Berto at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

“It’s a stunning visual effect and one that Koenigsegg is unlikely to ever produce again, ensuring the exclusivity of the ‘three whites’ forever,” the company revealed in a statement.

The car features an AMG-based twin-supercharged 4.8-liter V-8 engine that kicks out 1,018 horsepower, more than enough to propel the sleek 2,822-pound machine to hyper-legal speeds on the Las Vegas Strip.

The Trevita can accelerate from 0-60 mph in 2.8 seconds and achieves a top speed of 254 mph.

Christian von Koenigsegg began building bespoke sports cars in 1994, and his company has earned a niche in the automotive world despite extremely limited production numbers.

Koenigsegg’s popularity among car cognoscenti expanded exponentially when the CCX model was featured on the popular English television program “Top Gear.” When the show’s mysterious test driver known as “The Stig” suffered a high-speed spin while making a timed run in the CCX in 2006, Koenigsegg added a rear spoiler, and the revised machine set a new record for the “Top Gear” test track.

The Trevita is Koenigsegg’s most radical ride yet — perfect for a flamboyant character like Mayweather, who is so proud of his new acquisition that he shared details with the world on Instagram.

One thing is for certain: If Mayweather’s taste in cars continues to occupy the $5 million bracket, he’ll have to go to work in the ring more often.
