Money Market Funds (MMFs) have become popular in the country to invest, save, or use as emergency funds. An MMF is a type of Unit Trust where people pool their money together.
The investor gives their money to a fund manager who then uses the pooled funds to invest in approved financial instruments in the Capital Markets after careful analysis and planning.
Fund managers usually invest in short-term, highly liquid financial instruments like call deposits, treasury bills, corporate notes, and bank fixed deposits.
Nabo Capital, the manager of Nabo Money Market Fund, is one of Kenya’s well-known money market fund accounts, having been in existence for over 50 years. Recently, Nabo Capital has been delivering above-market returns by offering investors an effective annual yield of 16.01% on MMF accounts.
According to the fund manager, their goal is to maximize income by investing in a diversified portfolio of short-term debt securities and instruments, while also aiming to preserve capital and maintain high liquidity.
Nabo Capital partners with KCB as the fund trustee, Stanbic Bank as the custodian, and Grant Thornton International as the auditor to consistently build a balanced and profitable investment portfolio.
Pius Muchiri, the fund’s manager, explained that Nabo focuses on goal-based investing, which is a more intuitive method compared to investing based on risk-adjusted returns.
“We want to make investment what it is supposed to be: a means to an end, a means to your aspirations, a means to your children getting an education, a means to you achieving home ownership, a means to you getting financial freedom,” he said in a past interview with Macropolis.
He noted that when people consider investing, their first concern lies in who to trust in guiding them. Muchiri stated that their long-standing presence in Africa allows the MMF to offer the same level of services as firms in major financial cities.
He also spoke of the company’s favourable working environment to its employees which has been a motivation for the business success and bringing stability in client relationships.
As of today, the total assets managed by the Nabo Money Market Fund stand at over Sh. 3.5 billion. Additionally, the Nabo USD Money Market Fund has Sh. 296.7 million in Assets Under Management.
