Poor visibility at Kigali Airport forces KQ478 flight to return to Nairobi

A Kenya Airways flight heading to Kigali was forced to return to Nairobi on Sunday morning following poor visibility at the Kigali International Airport.

According to a statement from Kenya Airways, KQ478 Flight encountered low visibility at around 7.45 am on Sunday morning.

Kenya Airways PLC (KQ) confirms that on 17 December 2023 at approximately 07:45 hrs (East African Time), KQ478 flight, on a scheduled operation from Nairobi to Kigali, encountered low visibility and deteriorating weather,” said Kenya Airways.

The KQ478 flight encountered the poor visibility on the normal approach to land at Kigali International Airport. Kenya Airways said that after two unsuccessful attempts to land, the crew elected to return to Nairobi for the safety of passengers and crew onboard.

“The aircraft landed safely in Nairobi at 09:50 hrs (East African Time). The passengers are being transferred on to the next available flight. Air turn backs are standard safety procedures,” said Kenya Airways.

“We sincerely apologise to our guests for the inconvenience and assure our customers that their safety and that of our crew is our highest priority.”

The poor visibility also affected flights by RwandAir, with the airline asking passengers to expect flight delays and cancellations.

“Due to poor visibility as a result of heavy fog at Kigali International Airport, we are expecting flight delays to/ from Kigali. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause,” said RwandAir.
