The cost of hiring Kenyans girls for house-help jobs in Saudi Arabia has been cut. This is after the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia revised downwards the maximum amount for recruitment of the workers.
Saudi revised the money downwards for several countries, with those of Kenya getting the biggest cut. The revisions show that these figures have been revised downwards by 17.2 per cent to a maximum of Sh. 383,811 down from Sh. 463,558, which is a difference of Sh. 79,747.
Speaking to Bizna Kenya, Mathew Freeman, an associate working with Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development the changes in fees announced by the Ministry this month relate to the recruitment fees charged by the recruitment agents. He said that they do not relate to the wages of employees.
The other countries whose recruitment fees has been revised domestic include Uganda, Philippines, Ethiopia, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh.
“The Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development has announced the reduction of the upper ceiling for the costs of recruiting domestic labour services in a number of countries…This step comes within the framework of the ministry’s efforts to review recruitment costs and ensure fair prices,” a statement by the Ministry stated.

“The decision comes within the framework of the ministry’s endeavour to develop all services, improve the labour market environment and enhance its attractiveness, and the keenness to review the costs of services provided and systems according to economic variables.”
