SGR fares increased by 50 per cent. See new fares

SGR fares have been increased by 50 per cent following a hike in fuel prices across the country.

According to the new fare changes that will come into effect starting on January 1, 2024. The new fares were announced through a statement by the Kenya Railway Service’s Madaraka Express Passenger Service.

“The increase is informed by changes in the energy and petroleum sector where prices of fuel have significantly increased thus affecting the cost of our operations,” the statement by Kenya Railway Service said.

Prices for first class seats have been increased to Sh. 4,500 for the Nairobi to Mombasa ticket while economy passengers will now pay Sh. 1,500.

First class travellers going to Mariakani from Nairobi will pay Sh. 4,310 while those going to the same destination on an economy ticket will pay Sh. 1,410.

The new SGR fares that will come into effect starting on January 1, 2024.

For the Nairobi- Suswa route, fare prices have been increased to Sh. 250. Travellers going to Mai Mahiu will pay Sh. 250 while those going to Ngong will pay Sh. 130. Passengers heading to Rongai will also pay Sh. 130.

Children between the age of 3 and 11 years travelling with adults will pay half the price on all routes while children aged above 11 years will pay the full price. In addition, travellers have been notified that if they seek to book advance tickets starting today, they will notice the hiked prices.

Besides the SGR, railway transport fares have also been increased for the Nairobi commuter rail service and the Kisumu and Nanyuki train services.
