SK Macharia, billionaire owner of Royal Media Services, has landed a plum position in the Murang’a County government. He was sworn in as a member of the Murang’a County Budget and Council Forum.
The swearing-in ceremony was graced by Murang’a County Governor Irungu Kang’ata and broadcast on Citizen TV.
SK Macharia’s new role entails advising the County Governor on policies related to the county budget and economic development.
Governor Irungu Kang’ata noted that the decision was a strategic one as the county hopes to attract investors and create more jobs for the youth.
“Let’s create an environment that attracts the best investors. This will increase employment for the youth, thus more taxes to be utilized for the benefit of this county,” he said in his speech.
To leverage on expertise, the Governor said that he selected top business figures with distinguished academic backgrounds and professional excellence. The appointments were first gazetted in November 2023.
The top names which featured in the gazette included former Equity chairman Peter Munga, business mogul Jimnah Mbaru, Professor Olive Mugenda and Ambassador Mary Muthoni.
Details of their contracts with information such as terms & longevity of service and remuneration were not publicly provided.

The newly sworn-in leaders are expected to provide advisory services aimed at exploring avenues for the county’s development. The Export Processing Zone will be a focal point of their attention.
“We believe the proposed EPZ will be a game changer in terms of economic growth and development of this county,” Kang’ata stated.
“The EPZ will utilize raw materials from the county and we also urge the EPZ to ensure that 99 per cent of the labour force for the project comes from Murang’a host county.”
