Governor Sospeter Ojaamong loses Teso South MP bid

Busia County’s outgoing governor, Sospeter Ojaamong has conceded his bid to become the Member of Parliament, Teso South. The governor was first elected in 2013 and also in 2017, serving the maximum number of terms for a governor per the Kenyan constitution.

“The elections are over but our principles will endure for generations. To my family, friends, team, and campaigners thank you for the unwavering support during my reign and campaign period,” read a statement on his Facebook.

Ojaamong has also congratulated the incoming governor in Busia County, Paul Otuoma for his win.

“Congratulations, H.E Paul Nyongesa Otuoma on being elected our 2nd county governor. You have just begun a fantastic chapter in your life. The transfer of power will be seamless in order to get you started.” He wrote.

“There will be trying moments. The critics will rage. Your ‘friends’ will disappoint you. But you will have an Almighty God to comfort you, a family who loves you and a country that will be pulling for you, including me.”

Sospeter has been a political figure in the country since the early 2000s when he was first elected MP for the Amagoro constituency. He was then reelected in 2007 as MP for the newly created Teso South constituency.

He was also the minister in the Ministry of Labour between 2008 and 2013 when he decided to vie for Busia’s gubernatorial spot. He won the elections twice.

Ojaamong was nominated under ODM to vie for the MP seat Teso South once again, which forced his competitor Geoffrey Omuse to move for an independent ticket. He was battling it out with Omuse and UDAs Mary Emase.
