On MyDramaList (MDL) online drama review portal, Woman in a Family of Swordsmen received an impressive rating of 6.8 out of a possible 10. It is set during the Sino-Japanese war, the story is about a young defiant woman during turbulent times. The soap opera’s main character is played by Tong Liyan, a 33-year-old Chinese lady who started her acting career in 2007. She is also a graduate of the Chinese Central Academy of Drama.
Strikingly, what set Woman from Family of Swordsmen apart from other dramas was the conflicting roles portrayed by numerous women in the play. For instance, Tong Liyan’s character Ge Dani is portrayed as a very independent, wild, and brave girl. On one hand, she has the personality of the traditional Chinese woman while on the opposite extreme, she has the courage to determine what is best for her and pursue it relentlessly.
Like other female character’s in the drama, Ge Dani is forced to come up against the chauvinistic inspired clan rules. And Tong Liyan does not disappoint in this role. The heroine and matriach tragedy character Shi Caifeng only works to make the soap more interesting. Unlike an all-blown out war against men, the drama shows concerted female efforts aimed at reversing backward male perceptions that are corrected little by little as the drama unfolds. This is shown while portraying the diversity and complexity of the human nature.
On one hand is Tong Liyan’s character Ge Dani who is the expression the good in human beings. She is cast as tolerant and considerate. On the other hand is Shi Caifeng, who is seen as the most distinctive villain. Yet, their different experiences and opportunities, and different personalities are largely influenced by their backgrounds and yearnings from what life offers them.
