How educated is Sylvia Mulinge?  Sylvia Mulinge was on June 30, 2022 appointed the new chief executive officer at MTN Uganda. 

This appointment saw her leave Safaricom after 16 years. At the time of her departure from Safaricom, Sylvia was serving as the Chief Consumer Business Officer.

Her new appointment  marks a breakthrough into senior corporate management. In June 1st 2018 appointed the Managing Director at Vodacom, Tanzania.

At the time of her appointment, she was the Director for Consumer Business. Her appointment was frustrated by the Tanzanian government and she ended up staying in Nairobi.

In November of that year, she was appointed to the newly created position of Safaricom Chief Customer Officer (CCO).

“Sylvia will be responsible for leading Safaricom’s customer obsession and will be in charge of consumer business, sales operations, customer care service, brand marketing and experience, digital and market development,” her appointment note said.

She was born in 1977 and attended St. Xavier’s Primary School from 1983 to 1990 in Nakuru town, and Mary Mount Secondary School from 1991 to 1994.

She then studied at the University of Nairobi and graduated in the year 2000 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Food Science and Technology.

Sylvia Mulinge began her career in August 2004 at Unilever, where she worked as the Assistant Regional Brand Manager in the laundry division, based in Durban, South Africa.

After nine months in South Africa, she was transferred to Kenya, as the brand manager for Sunlight, a Unilever brand. She worked there for another nine months, from May 2005 until January 2006.

In February 2006 she was hired by Safaricom Limited as the manager responsible for the company’s pre-pay product, working in that capacity until November 2007, when she was promoted to the rank of Head of Retail, in which position she served until August 2009.

For the 21 months, from August 2009 until April 2011, she worked as the Head of Safaricom Business, responsible for sales.

In May 2011, she was promoted to General Manager for Enterprise Business, working in that capacity for the next four years.

In May 2015, she was promoted to her current position as the Director of Consumer Business at Safaricom. She has risen through the ranks at the company to become a member of the senior management team at the company.

In 2014, Sylvia Mulinge was named among the “Top 40 Women Under 40 in Kenya 2014” by Business Daily Africa.
