Teachers in Kenya are reeling from shock after discovering that their much anticipated pay raise is as low as Sh36 for some job groups. The teachers were expecting increased salaries after signing a new pay multi billion deal.
However, as the July salaries have trickled in, teachers have found out that the pay raise is only amounting to just a couple of coins, and at most a couple of hundreds.
For example, teachers under job group C1 who are currently earning Sh28,491 were of the information that they would be earning Sh35,366. However, it has now emerged that according to the deal signed by the teachers’ unions and the Teachers Service Commission, the higher salary is the amount they will earn by the end of the fourth year.
This then translates to an annual increment of Sh1,711, which is further broken down to an increment of Sh142 per month for this category of teachers.
Teachers under job group C2 will get an annual increment of Sh1,199 which translates to about Sh100 per month. One of the teachers who spoke to the media said that they received an increment of Sh1,000. After deductions, their pay raise settled down at just Sh600.
Another teacher in job group C3 said that they had received Sh1,787 increment. However, they were hit with what they termed as double deductions. They were deducted Sh1,063 and then some Sh456, allegedly, as union charges for the CBA negotiations.

In yet another revelation, a teacher out of Nairobi showed that they had received just Sh256 in the highly publicized salary increment. Deputy principals are the worst hit with salary increments of just Sh36 per month. Senior teachers in the job group C5 reportedly took home only an additional Sh72 in their July salaries.
In some shocking cases, there are teachers who took home a deficit instead of a gain. For example, teachers who expected to pocket Sh776 took deductions of Sh640 for Kuppet fees, Sh224 for Pay As You Earn (PAYE) and ended up with a deficit of Sh88.
