Teachers to go on strike on January 2, says Sossion

Teachers’ Strike: Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) secretary general Wilson Sossion has announced that teachers across the country will go on strike on January 2, 2019.

The teachers will be striking in protest against the delocalization exercise that the Teachers Service Commission has been carrying out.

The head teachers were given until December 28 to hand over and report to their new stations. Bizna Kenya had earlier reported that the TSC was planning to transfer up to 5,000 teachers and head teachers in January.

“Merry Christmas… but we can’t promise you that the new year will start well… parents should adjust their budgets very well because Christmas will be extended into the new year,” said Sossion. He further accussed the TSC of “de-professionalising the teaching profession”.

Yesterday, the TSC had maintained that it solely has the mandate to transfer any teacher to any part of the country. It fifth attributed the latest transfers on the retirement o school heads who have reached the maximum retirement age.
