Juliet Makena: How growth of mobile services has impacted my money

There is no doubt that the growth of mobile data consumption in Kenya has been immense. Unlike ten years ago, today’s telecommunications consumer is more demanding; demanding of more competitive and comprehensive offerings that address their dynamic needs. These range from browsing, downloading, streaming, digital transactions, news consumption, and digital applications. All these services have are now integral to everyday life.

But are Kenyans satisfied with the provision of data, voice and text services in Kenya? To mark the telecommunications customer week, we sat down with Juliet Makena, a marketing executive who resides in Nairobi to get a better grasp of her experience with local network providers.

How many mobile service providers have you used previously?

I have used one. I was among a bandwagon that joined the ship just because it was what everyone else was doing. I was not too keen on value.

How has mobile services, voice and the internet, impacted your social and business interactions?

These are services that have now become part of my daily living. There can never be going back on the power of data, voice, and text in communicating or doing business. Life has become much easier. With mobile money services for example, I can’t really remember the last time I physically went to a bank to do a transaction. I can make a call to my bank or any other service provider when I need anything done or approve a transaction or even take advantage of things like internet banking. This is very important especially at this time when we’re all still trying to fight the pandemic by reducing our movement or social interaction.

Which mobile service provider are you currently using? Why?

I am currently on Telkom. I spend most of my time online and Telkom has been able to offer me some of the best data and call packages. What this means is I don’t have to keep purchasing data every other time. Using offers like Madaraka life, for example, I am assured that I have data throughout the month and the good thing is the data will automatically be renewed the next month. This allows me not only to stay online but also save some little cash which I can use for other purposes.

How do you find Telkom’s internet packages? Which data bundle are you subscribed to? Why? How has it impacted your experience and pocket?

Telkom has some of the best data packages you can get out here from any service provider. I am subscribed to the Madaraka Life offer this allows me to stay online throughout without worrying about missing that skype message or that important work-related email.

I was a millionaire making Sh. 1mn monthly, today I hawk masks in Thika

What would you like to see Telkom improve on?

Maybe 4G coverage for some of us who are always on the road to some very remote areas of this country.

What is the future of mobile service provision in Kenya?

I think the future can only get better. It is a good thing that in our market, we have providers with some of the best voice and data packages. This has created value, variety, and the freedom to choose, which has in effect been a positive for the pocket.
