Clinton Mutwiri, a student who emerged as the third-best student in the 2021 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE), is yet to join a higher learning institution due to lack of university fees.

Announcing the results on April 23, 2022, former Education Cabinet Secretary, the Late Prof.George Magoha, named Mutwiri from Angaine Day Secondary School in Meru as the third top student nationally in sub-county schools.

He scored an A- (Minus) of 81.5 points with straight As in mathematics, history, and business studies. His impressive performance earned him an opportunity to join Kabarak University to pursue a degree in clinical medicine.

Citizen Digital reported that Mutwiri missed out on university funding the last year, forcing his mother, Lucy Karwitha, to raise the required Sh110,000 per semester.

Karwitha, who has raised his two sons singlehandedly, was however unable to raise the money, so he transferred his son to a nearby, less expensive university in Meru.

Despite his good performance, Mutwiri faced more than six rejections from other universities in Meru before landing a slot at Kenya Methodist University (KEMU).

Lack of fees has forced him to wait another year at home before starting his degree classes, as the University demands him to pay 40% of the semester’s university fee of Sh.84,500.

His mother, who earns income from cleaning people’s clothes, remains unsure of where to get the money as she uses her little earnings to pay for her firstborn son’s fees at the Karumo Technical Training Institute.

Karwitha called upon President William Ruto to come to her son’s rescue and turn his dream into a reality.
