Tuskys employee robs cashier Sh. 320,000 as salary crisis persists

Tuskys Crisis: An employee of troubled retailer Tuskys Supermarket on Saturday robbed a cashier Sh. 320,000.

The employee reportedly stole the cash after brandishing the knife to the cashier at the retailer’s Karasha branch along Kenyatta Avenue. The amount was part of the day’s collection.

According to the police, the incident happened at around 7pm incident. Police said they established that the CCTV server at the supermarket had been destroyed and the incident was not captured by surveillance cameras. However, no arrests have been made so far.

This is the latest incident involving employees at the retailer. Whereas it was not clear if the employee was motivated by unpaid salary dues, employees at the retailer have previously gone rogue to get their salaries.

In November last year, fed up employees resorted to paying themselves from the supermarket’s cash tills. This came as the retailer struggled to pay its workers, some of whom had been holding demonstrations in the retailer’s Nairobi branches.

According to a report that appeared in the Royal Media Services’ Citizen, unpaid branch managers opted to ‘pay themselves’ from daily sales proceeds alongside inventory. Those who resigned took with them cash from daily sales.

In a letter, a cash attendant at one of the retailer’s stores resigned while taking with her cash from the supermarket’s till. “I have just decided to reduce my unpaid salary and paid myself ninety thousand shillings. In case anyone has an issue, kindly deduct this from my salary,” read part of the resignation letter written on November 1 and addressed to the company’s Human Resource office.
