Govt Lists Universities Approved to Offer Law Courses

The Council of Legal Education has published a list of all universities licensed to offer law courses in Kenya as of June 30, 2023.

In a notice, Council of legal education CEO Mary Mutugi said Strathmore Law School, Mount Kenya University, Catholic University of Eastern Africa, and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) are the only institutions licensed to offer a master’s in law.

“Under the provisions of Sections 2, 8 (1) (b), 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, and 48 of the Legal Education Act No. 27 of 2012, the following are the only licensed legal education providers and legal education programs in Kenya as indicated respectively,” reads the notice.

The council further said that only 17 Universities in the country are approved to offer bachelor of law programs.

The 17 are Daystar University, Mount Kenya University, University of Nairobi, Kisii University, University of Embu, Umma University, and Africa Nazarene University.

Others are Chuka University, Moi University, Egerton University, Kabarak University, Strathmore Law School, Maseno University, South Eastern University of Kenya, and JKUAT.

For Diploma in law programs, only four institutions are listed; they are Mount Kenya University, Kisii University, Kenya Institute of Management, and the Catholic University of Eastern Africa.
